Lowest Tax Rate in Years for Most New Zealanders

National MP Dr Jackie Blue says this year’s Budget is about building on our economic recovery and providing opportunities for businesses and families to get ahead.

“National is delivering changes to the tax system that will mean 77 per cent of people who work in Mt Roskill will face a tax rate of no higher than 17.5 per cent,” Dr Blue says.

“This is great news given that just two years ago a number of these people would have faced tax rates of 33 per cent.

“This is a huge benefit for hardworking people. It is putting the incentives to work hard, in the right place.”

The centrepiece of Budget 2010 is a major tax package aimed at reforming the tax system to make it fairer, more sustainable, and to better support economic growth.

“We have lowered both our company and income tax rates to enable a competitive and ‘open for business’ market,” Dr Blue says.

“This, coupled with a continued focus on Crown debt levels, will help to improve New Zealand’s economic performance. And that will mean an improvement in lifestyle for our Kiwi families. We’re not out of the woods yet, but we’re well on our way.”
