Volunteer Awareness Week 2009 (June 14 - 20)
This week we want to celebrate more than one million hard working volunteers across the country.
Volunteers Awareness Week runs from 14-20 June and is a chance to thank those who tirelessly contribute to our communities at the grassroots level.
Our volunteer sector is made up of 97,000 community organisations. Each of these groups play a huge role economically, culturally and socially in New Zealand. About 90 per cent of these community groups function entirely on unpaid labour.
This year’s appeal has an emphasis on supporting and encouraging Youth – breaking through the barriers, getting youth involved in our communities as part of their busy and demanding lives.
We all have a role in encouraging and supporting volunteering. During these tough economic times this is more important than ever, that we work together to make our communities stronger.
I really encourage you to take the time out this week and thank the community volunteers, street collectors, coaches, mentors – those who make our communities what they are. I also encourage you to give it go and get involved. Contributing and volunteering builds and strengthens our communities.
To get involved, contact your local community groups or visit www.volunteernow.org.nz to find volunteering opportunities.
If you’re already a volunteer register as part of New Zealand’s volunteering social community network ‘Go Mad’ www.gomad.co.nz.
